Barry Lewis and the White Tent

From 24-29 May 2007, Barry Lewis brought his White Tent to Birmingham, siting it outside in the Bullring between Selfridges and St Martins Church. The project is partly funded by Urban Fusion, in collaboration with Rhubarb-Rhubarb, Jessops and the Bull Ring Management Team.

Lewis took over 6000 portrait shots during the six days the tent was open to the public and captured some truely wonderful characters, highlights included; an all female roller derby team, urban street dancing troop, not to mention the diverse cultures that visted Birmingham. All the visitors to the tent were given a unique reference number which allowed them to collect their free printed portraits for from a local branch of Jessops or altertively download their images from  www.picturehouses.co.uk.

The Rhubarb team are planning to turn some of the images into life size portraits for the Festival, later on in July and are engaged just now in some sponsorship negotiation.

It’s taken 14 months to get together the financial support for the project, which was one of only six successful awards made from the Urban Fusion submissions, for which there were 128 entries!
